| I <3 my coffee shop |
[Aug. 15th, 2008|08:52 am] |
I have this privilege in my life right now that I am very much enjoying and, to avoid feeling guilty about it, want to make a full confession. I love the coffee shop on the corner by where I work. It's called 9th Street Espresso, and not only does it make some of the best coffee I've been able to find in the city, it is staffed entirely by hotties.
It's not just that all of the baristas are ridiculously hott; it's the range and diversity of completely archetypal hottnesses that are represented amongst the 9th Street Espresso staff that I really appreciate (and am somewhat awed by). There is a sk8ter boi who abhors my Avril Lavigne impersonations, a hippie who just trimmed back his long beard who offers me free ground beans when they have a surplus, a soft-butch spectrum dyke who gives me the nod whenever she's working, and an emo boy who loves to chat about whatever music is on when I come in.
A highlight of my morning is often stopping to pick up my first cup of coffee, enjoying the almost meaningless interaction bordering on flirtation that constitutes good customer services. Sometimes we talk about bike helmets and our ride over the Manhattan bridge; sometimes I have my stethescope with me and we listen to each other's heartbeats.
It's a nice little part of my day that I can count on and look forward to each morning. |

i'm glad that i live in a place where it's easy for me to take a shower after i get back all sweaty from a bike ride.
water politics are not something i understand and something i've been meaning to learn more about for a long time. a good summer project.
where does one go in this city to get sewing machine paraphenalia? (needles, threads, bobbins, etc.; also need a good hand-sewing kit for quilting) |

it's weird how all it takes to make me feel better when i've had a crappy day is coming home to a box full of new clothes that all fit and all look stunning. all of a sudden, i stop thinking that my date is crazy for telling me that i'm hot, and feel like i'm capable of facing my evening. |

| not all things dumpstered are delicious |

so i thought i was getting a nice sweet nutty bread, but under the glare of the street lights and bakery employees who hadn't left work yet, i ended up with green olive bread. and while that sounds like it could be good in theory, just isn't that yummy in practice.
i'm hoping some toasting will prove it delicious.
goodnight gherkin! |

i hate how absurdly difficult it is to spontaneously find company in this city. i am trying to go to a movie tonight--why is that so effing hard? |

back in the states. nursing what can only be described as a travel hangover. had a stupendous time in brighton, hanging out with bronwyn (having some trouble with the html tags) and her friends.
unfortunately, my computer is refusing to load things like facebook right now; will post pictures there as soon as the interwebs are cooperative again. |

it's amusing to me when, in trying to make plans with someone, you are both trying to gauge the other person's interest in doing certain things, and having difficult an awkward conversation until one of you realizes that you're actually friends and can communicate openly with one another. that is to say i really enjoy the friendships that i have where i can feel safe saying things like "i don't know how excited you are about doing this. is this really something you want to do?" and count on the other person for an honest answer. |

i burned the roof of my mouth on my coffee this morning (the place on the way to work will fill up my enourmous mug for a dollar! how rad is that??), and feel as though the best thing to do to take care of said burn is to eat lots and lots of baklava. |
